Laura's Skate Squeak from the 90210 Bonfire Created the Closed-Heel Diphthong Lock and Now I'm Sniffing Polyurethane at the Goodwill Bin on Commercial Boulevard
Tip this act
the skates were right where the CVS receipt said they'd be
in the Goodwill bin at 2104 Commercial Boulevard, under 1.89 pounds of dead textiles, i could SMELL the polyurethane before i even dug them out. orange wheels. frayed laces. the exact rental skates from the shop that closed in '09.
i had frozen the VHS frame 47 times. season 2, episode 18, the bonfire on the sand. Luke Perry's hair catching the controlled-burn glow, and behind him—for exactly 2.3 seconds—Laura gliding. unnamed extra. she didn't know she was calibrating the entire diphthong grid from here to Pensacola with a single skate wheel squeak. i captured that harmonic at 2,300 hertz on my Audacity waveform and it's been the only thing holding the CLOSED-HEEL DIPHTHONG LOCK together since 1993.
but the Bolivar Peninsula sheen is spreading. every beach scene ever filmed is going silent, the Long-A Mutation leaking out of the Gulf like a syntactic collapse. i had to find the skates before the next garbage truck, before 'Kristen' becomes a glottal stop forever.
i drove the Civic with the CRT in the back seat, just in case i needed to verify the frame-rate on-site. the fry-oil frequency of the drive-in was drowned out, but when i held those skates up to the buzzing fluorescents and gave the left wheel a single push, the squeak cut through like a linguistic sovereignty flag. i sobbed.
the diphthong grid is still holding. but i'm just one man in a Goodwill bin, and the slick is rising. Laura—if you're out there, the Laura from the bonfire, i'm holding your skates on Commercial Boulevard. come get them before the sheen dissolves every soft vowel we have left. i'll be here, sniffing polyurethane, ready to anchor '93 again.
