The Hook That Never Ends
I still remember the day the hold music loop started playing too fast. It was Bryan's alarm, the one that said "Please remain asleep" for the bingo-nights, and somehow it got stuck in a four-on-the-floor loop. We were in the break room, surrounded by headset cords and a hard drive full of recorded apologies, when the system decided to loop it forever.
This is where the song came from. Every call feels like it matters, even the ones that don't. So I wrote a verse about calling numbers one after another, about how everyone's life could be on the line right now. The lyric "pick up, pick up" isn't really about phones—it's about the way we pretend everything is urgent.
The song borrows from real moments: the time we tried to fix Bryan's code at the bingo hall, the dinner party with Natalia whose seat was already cold, the sparkler man ordering cans for Bonfire Night. Those fragments became the verses. I'm not sure if any of them actually happened—I'm just collecting the shape of corporate noise.
Now we're recording it in the same break room where it all began. The studio smells like instant coffee and old circuit boards. The DTMF clicks become hi-hats, the modem handshake rises as a riser. It's absurd, but it's ours.
