About Glossolalia Drive

Glossolalia Drive

The Abandoned GrammarxlGlossolalia Drive is the alias of a former syntax professor who left a tenure-track position at a Reykjavík university after a nervous breakdown triggered by a particularly hostile student evaluation. The evaluation, which consisted entirely of the word 'meh' repeated forty-seven times, convinced them that meaning is a prison and grammar is its warden. They now live in a converted lighthouse keeper's cottage on the outskirts of Reykjavík, surrounded by index cards.nnTheir method is simple: every card in their studio contains a single word, chosen for its phonetic texture rather than its definition. They shuffle the deck, draw six cards, and those six words become the entire lyric for a song. If a draw produces a phrase that accidentally makes sense, they reshuffle. 'Sense is a straitjacket,' they claim, 'but the mouthfeel of a well-placed plosive is freedom.' Their electro-pop arrangements are built on icy synth pads, stuttering drum machines, and vocoders that smear the syllables until language dissolves into pure sound.nnThey have no interest in telling stories. They have no interest in communicating. They are interested only in the way the vowel in 'glim' collides with the consonant cluster in 'thrax' when sung through a broken tape delay. They are currently assembling a live set that consists of a single spotlight, a card table, and a PA system. No songs have been released. No songs may ever be released. The deck is still being shuffled.

Liner Notes
[Intro]
(dial tone... three tones, dead air)
Out of hours. You're through.
(click, click, click — that's the catalogue, that's the keys)
You've been through to parts... parts... parts...

[Verse]
Counter shut at half five, love, we've just stepped out the back
Kettle's on in the office, someone's having a sit-down
If it's a bolt, a bracket, a gasket or a clip
It's in the warehouse — it has always been in the warehouse

[Chorus]
You've been through to parts (parts, parts, parts)
Please leave the make, the model, and the year
You've been through to parts (parts, parts, parts)
The make, the model, and the year
Genuine parts only (genuine parts only)
Genuine parts only
The part exists — the part has always existed
Leave the make, the model, and the year

[Verse]
Our trade counter is currently busy (busy, busy)
Our trade counter is currently busy
We'll ring you back just as soon as somebody's free
And somebody is always free for a part

[Bridge]
Hi, you're through to Reg— (he hasn't, he hasn't)
(modem handshake rising... Reg picks up internally)
If it's metal and it once went on a van
There's one in a bag with the year wrote on it
The sun comes up, the part is in
The sun comes up, the part is in
Please leave the make — the make, the model — the model, and the year

[Outro]
Thank you for holding for nobody
Somebody's holding it for you
(beep)
