The Loop Vocabulary
The individual known as Dancefloor Arsonist, legal name Kevin P. Murchison, has not uttered a complete sentence in the English language in over fourteen months. Instead, he communicates by stringing together the words Fire, Desire, Hire, Dancefloor, and Want More in patterns he believes convey any necessary human sentiment. At the grocery store he will approach the cashier and state 'Hire desire fire want more' to confirm he needs a plastic bag; when asked his name he replies 'Dancefloor desire hire fire' without breaking eye contact.
His home studio in a Oshawa high-rise apartment overlooks a parking lot, and there he builds what he calls 'vocabulary loops' — extended house tracks where a single phrase ('Fire, hire, desire, dancefloor, want more, fire') is repeated across an entire side of a digital file, filtered in and out of a funk guitar sample and a four-to-the-floor kick drum. He works exclusively in the genre of handbag house and filter disco, convinced that the peak era of dance music was 1999 to 2004 and that all subsequent developments are a distraction from the core mission of repeating the same five words until they lose meaning and become pure rhythm.
Dancefloor Arsonist wears a single rhinestone-studded glove and a visor with a built-in LED scrolling sign that displays whatever five-word sequence he is currently fixated on. He does not consider himself a musician so much as a missionary for the lexical power of the 2000s dancefloor, and he will approach strangers on the GO Train to play them a minute-long snippet of a track titled only 'firehirefirewantmorehire' and await their reaction in absolute silence.
