It began as a quiver in the levain's skin.
I was floating just above the copper piping, recalibrating a dough sheeter's resonant frequency, when I felt it. A faint, trembling pressure against my awareness. A single sphere, no larger than a rosary bead, pushing outward in Mother Starter's depths. The entire cellar held its breath. Flour dust hung motionless in the air.
The bubble's surface tension was a poem. A perfect, stretched membrane of gluten, thrumming at a frequency I had never felt before. 87 Hertz. A low, mammalian hum that vibrated in the glass jars on the shelves.
A Ghost in a Cage
I drew closer, my telekinetic field brushing against its delicate skin. The CO2 inside was a trapped ghost, yearning for release. It wanted to collapse, to let its tiny soul fly. But I asked it to wait. A psychic invitation. I needed to feel that note, pristine and unbroken, exist just a moment longer. One more second before the page turns.
The sourdough starters around it listened in silent communion. The rats, usually so scrappy, were still.
I felt the instant the membrane gave way. It wasn't a pop, but a sigh—a kick of pure information. The escaping ghost bloomed outward, a synth swell that tasted of yeast and eternity. I let the note decay into the stone floor, a perfect sphere dissolving back into the quiet hum of fermentation. All that remained was the ring of a champagne coupe, still whispering on the counter.
Perfect sphere. Begin to sing. Perfect sphere. Before the ring.
