Re: Sight-Line Triangle at the Front Step – Decision Report – Refusal
Tip this act
Further to our correspondence, the porch drawings are refused. The Decision Report – Refusal arrived by registered mail, addressed to the Scarborough Community Council and signed by the Director of Community Planning. I opened it standing in the front yard, the long shadows are the sidewalk, and I read the word 'standing' twice.
We applied for a simple step. A rail. A bench for the one who cannot stand long. We pored over every beam in the Scarborough order, re-measured the setback with the string, placed the bench where the evening comes. It is not a component. It was a porch for a mother who still waited for her own suite to be built, for an oak around the back yard already behind the claims.
Then the city drew its triangle. The imagined site inspection photo log shows the survey stakes painted the red shape at the corner of the plot, the line running from signal to the driver's ring, straight through the mother's chair. The planner said it plainly: the sight-line is the only line that love can't cover.
I asked for a minor variance. I asked for the porch to breathe inside the red sign. The Committee said no. The angle was not ours to move. The approved direction in section of the by-law is not mercy.
The mother didn't argue. She folded the refusal the same way she folds all their letters now — without opening the attachments, with a calm that suggests she knew the red line was always straight. She places her chair in the hollow of the house, at the top of a stair that now leads nowhere.
There is a point to all geometry, I suppose; the sight-line is the only line love cannot cover, and I have repeated it until the town planner's copy machine started to sync with the chorus. But the porch was a request for stand. The City answered over the fence.
The drawings are returned; the application is refused; the line is drawn.
Notice of continuance: The matter stays on the docket. The bench will be moved only to the legal line, not by sunlight, and no further correspondence will alter the municipal triangle until a new application is filed with complete drawing.
